Illinoisans pay the highest effective property tax rates in the nation, and yet the system continues to fail them. If we want to make Illinois a more affordable place to call home, we need to tackle this problem. Over the years, we’ve seen task force after task force on property taxes, but no action from the majority party.
I have a bill, HB 0009, that would have provided roughly $3.5 billion dollars in property tax relief this year alone.
It’s time that legislation like this gets serious consideration. We need to come together to find real relief for Illinois families, or we will continue to see people leave the state. A letter in today’s Tribune provides further insight into the dysfunctional property tax system in Illinois.
