Springfield, IL – State Representative Dan Ugaste (R-Geneva) issued the following statement in response to the passage of the Fiscal Year 2027 state budget:
“Democrats in Illinois championed affordability as one of their top priorities this year. Not surprisingly, they have once again delivered the largest budget in state history at $55.9 billion. Illinois families desperately need lower taxes, lower costs, and responsible spending, but this budget does the opposite. The budget includes at least $220,000 in pork projects, sweeping surplus gas sales tax funds to close budget holes, and providing no direct property tax relief to homeowners. In the midst of another pay raise for legislators, Democrats also included $800 million in new taxes and fees while freezing LGDF funding.
“We should be focusing on economic growth through real structural reforms and sound policies with no tax increases. Once again, transparency was severely lacking as the final night of the legislative session spilled past a midnight deadline and into the early morning hours of June 1. Normal transparency rules were waived, and this left no time for review, oversight, and public input. The majority party’s tactics are shameful, and Illinoisans deserve better from their government.”
