UGASTE STATEMENT ON UPDATED CENSUS DATA

State Representative Dan Ugaste (R-Geneva) released the following statement on the newly updated data issued by the U.S. Census Bureau on August 12th:

“It’s clear from these newly released numbers by the Census Bureau that the legislative maps passed in the Illinois General Assembly last spring are unconstitutional and void. That map process, which was conducted behind closed doors by the House Democrats, relied on inaccurate data. In order to produce a fair map, we need a transparent process, reliable numbers, which can only be found through the U.S. Census, and an independent commission. Instead, the faulty data used by the Democrat majority produced an unfair, inaccurate map—one that not only disenfranchises voters but grossly undercounted many.

By law, as it is written in the Illinois Constitution, the next step is a bipartisan Legislative Redistricting Commission. I look forward to that commission correctly drawing fair maps, ones in which our state so desperately needs and Illinois residents deserve.”
